Funny Architectural Wisdom

Today I read the BLOG from Edwin Zwart, a colleague of mine at Capgemini The Netherlands. He started a BLOG last december and uses a lot of YOUTUBE visualization in his posts. I must admit, this is a real piece of out-of-the-box thinking and working (his post).

I haven’t read his whole BLOG, but I certainly like to share one of his posts with you, my readers.

Dear Mr. Architect,

Please design and build me a house. I am not quite sure what I need, so let’s get started. My house should have between two and 45 bedrooms. Just make sure the plans are such that the bedrooms can be easily added or deleted. When you bring the blueprints to me, I’ll make the final decision about what I want.

Also, bring me the cost breakdowns for each configuration so I can arbitrarily pick one at a later time.…You must be thrilled to be working on such an interesting project! To be able to use the latest techniques and materials and to be given such freedom in your designs is something that can’t happen very often.

Contact me as soon as possible with your ideas and completed plans.

Sincerely,

The Client

PS:

My wife just told me she disagrees with many of the instructions I have given you in this letter. As the architect, it is your responsibility to resolve these differences. I have tried in the past and have failed to accomplish this. If you can’t handle this responsibility, I will have to find another architect.

PSS:

Perhaps what I need is not a house at all, but a travel trailer. Please advise me as soon as possible if this is the case.

I must admit I recognise a lot of customers in this piece of writing in his post. Back in 1996, when I concluded my study, I learned that, when asking questions to the customers, you start with; “What do you want exactly?” or “Which Information do you need?”.

From my point of, as an architect we need to help the customer build their own blueprint. They are not able to it themselves because of the information (OVER)flow. Beside that we all know we cannot have wisdom in every aspect and know everything about everything, but by sharing our knowledge we are able to make a joined synergy effect towards the customer and ourselves.

I will be trying to follow the BLOG by Edwin Zwart and get a little of his knowledge transfered to me. At least his knowledge about the usage of YOUTUBE is mavelous…

Thanks for your kind words about my blog. I haven’t found the time to look into your blog yet for reasons that I may let you know at a later stage.
My question is, and it is a tricky one, do you want to receive a meme request from me ? If so, you should tell your readers 8 statments about yourself and you should forward the request to 8 other bloggers.

    Sincerely – Edwin
